Tuesday, April 1st, 2003  Jerez – Vejer de la Frontera  84 km.

Highway (main road) the first 10 km. Then freeway – there was no other possibility. 10 km. Past El Porto de Santa Maria it takes off to the right towards Cadiz. Before riding into Cadiz you have to cross a bridge which, unfortunately, is prohibited for bikers. It’s a pity that it wasn’t marked accordingly 10 km before, because now I had to make a detour (ca 40 km.) around the hole bay. Just before San Fernando I decided to skip Cadiz and to ride to Vejer de la Frontera. I met a Spanish couple who were also underway with bikes and when I mentioned the problem to them the man said he always goes over this bridge  He said that I probably came from England or Germany where this would not be allowed, but here they don’t take things quite so seriously. Vejer is situated on the top of a mountain. It goes up steeply for 2 km. (8 to 10%), but the effort is worthwhile. A beautiful view and a gorgeous village.
