Wednesday, April 2nd 2003 Vejer de la Frontera - Algeciras 65km.
Under cloudless sky I left Vejer and rode 2 km. Downhill in hairpin turns to A 393 in the direction of Barbate. There I met a group of German cyclists on a organized tour . This is tempting (combined beach vacation with city tours), no clothes problems and accompanied by a “sweeper car”. A beautiful stretch along the Atlantic coast to Cabo de Gracia. The road ends there for vehicles – they have to turn around. For once an advantage for bikers – take note that the road is blocked with a fence/railing for cars but cyclist can go past on the right side. A 200 meters steep climb and one stands in front of tower. The asphalt ends here and a dirt path, which is easy to oversee, goes off up to the left .A mountain bike would be the best here but my 28 inch hybride in first gear did the trick. After about a kilometre the road was paved again . In Tarifa the view was great. The Moroccan mountains were well visible across the 13 km. channel. Busy shipping traffic between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Now it goes from sea level to 340 meters (El Bujeo), then down again and back up to 320 meters, the last hurdle before reaching El Pelayo. Finally one sails 10 km. down to Algeciras. I’m taking a day rest to make an excursion to Gibraltar.
