Thursday, April 3rd, 2003  Excursion to Gibraltar (return) 64 km.

There is only one way to reach the monkey island. ( No ferry runs from Algeciras to Gibraltar) Take the freeway until the Ronda Guandarranque exit. The first exit “Paloma “doesn’t work. The road only goes as far as the river. It continues further on the other side but there is neither a bridge nor a ferry. Did the Euro subventions run out?? There was a camper parked there with Swiss number plates and I was invited for a nice chat. Had to show passport twice when crossing the border, then stood on British soil. For 11 Euro there is a cable train which takes passengers up the 400 m. high mountain. A cloudless sky made it possible to see the Moroccan mountains from here. I heard the school children (all in uniforms like in England) speaking both English and Spanish. The police and customs officers, on the other hand, only spoke Spanish together. From up above one sees a road going all the way around the island. Unfortunately, however, there is a prohibited military zone on the east side. It is worthwhile, though, to cycle to the end of the Penisula. There is a nice lighthouse there and an oversized Mosque.
