The Baltic Sea

A big helter-skelter

The Baltic-Sea at Travemünde

Now the landscape has a similarity to parts of Switzerland. It goes up and down, not for a long time, however sometimes up to 4%. We cycle via Eutin, Suesel and Haftkrug to the Baltic Sea.

Shortly before Haftkrug we meet a biking couple. They tell us of a tragedy that took place in 1945. The SS kept 7000 prisoners on a ship. The English mistook it as a war ship and scuttle it. On the cemetery is a small commemorative plaque.

At the beach in Haftkrug we see for the first time the Baltic Sea. It looks more calm than the North Sea and much cleaner.

Now we cycle along the coast through Travemuende, Kalkhorst, Brook, Elmenhorst to Kluetz. There is a windmill build in the year 1904. Beautifully restored and converted into a restaurant, inviting for coffee and cake with cream.

Further along the Mecklenburgian bay to Beckerwitz, where we put up our tent. Most pedestrian-free zone in the former East Germany are paving stone roads. Very beautiful but for cyclist a torture.
